t o r n a d o

You've probably seen on the news that we had a giant tornado hit Tuscaloosa this week...

We're ok and our apartment is ok, we now have access to power & internet on our street, although our water isn't safe to drink without boiling. Just a 10 minute walk away, though, things are totally different. I don't even recognize the neighborhood I used to bike through on my way to the post office...

I have more photos here on flickr, including a shot of what used to be my local Hobby Lobby... sigh.... everything is topsy turvy. My thoughts are with those who lost homes and loved ones...

{a new pattern in the works!}

Project ReStyle... slippies!

I'm always in need of slippers... I wear them constantly around the house (yes, like a grandma). When I found that someone had thrown out a pair of never worn slippers still in the plastic package (oh yes, another dumpster story!) I couldn't have been luckier. Except that these slippies are monogrammed with initials that are not mine (and in a font that isn't my style)...

Never mind! I just dug through my scrap basket and stitched two pieces of floral fabric on top of the monogram. Now they are just right...

Pardon my apartment carpet... I'm moving to a place with wood floors in August : )

knitknitknit // coffee cozy

After some fun & relaxing knitting I've written up a new pattern! A lace-patterned coffee cozy in sunny gold (or whatever color you choose!)...

The pattern is great for various levels of knitters... the techniques used are knitting, purling, doing a "yarn over" and "slip slip knit" decreases - pretty simple stuff! But when you combine a bunch of simple techniques, you create lovely lace pattern. The yarn is an Aran/10 ply like the TLC and Red Heart yarns that you can find pretty much everywhere, so no worries about matching the yarn!

The Good Morning Sunshine coffee cozy pattern is available in my shop and on Ravelry, too!

for all of us literature lovers...

I finished a set of cross stitch projects this weekend that I think the lit lover's will appreciate!

...an ode to Jane Eyre...

Reader, I married him. A quiet wedding we had: he and I, the
parson and clerk, were alone present. When we got back from church,
I went into the kitchen of the manor-house, where Mary was cooking
the dinner and John cleaning the knives, and I said -

"Mary, I have been married to Mr. Rochester this morning."

(from Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte)

...an ode Jane Austen...

Good-humoured, unaffected girls, will not do for a man who has been used to
sensible women. They are two distinct orders of being.
-- Jane Austen

...an ode to Emily Dickinson...

PHOSPHORESCENCE. Now there's a word to lift your hat to...to find that phosphorescence, that light within, that's the genius behind poetry.
-- Emily Dickinson

I charted the designs myself (very fun, actually!) using graph paper and stitched the designs using some of my delicious DMC Perle cotton thread. I even attached some of my extra vintage millinery flowers to the top of each hoop!

All three of this little pieces (in 4 inch hoops) are up in my shop... stop by and take a look, let me know what you think : )

retro kitchen

Check out my new, retro, kitchen gadgets! I gorgeous turquoise hand mixer (I've been on the lookout for one of these for quite a while!!!!) and a jar lifter for canning this summer...

The jar lifter was in it's original package when I got it, it looked like it was from the 60's. I'm thrilled with these finds!
