My new apartment is almost ready! We've been working hard to clean it and arrange everything... today I sewed some curtains and organized my closet!

My Etsy shop has re-opened and I'll be back to blogging regularly on Monday!
Yay!

in which my cat imitates art

My cat Macy often lays in this extravagantly reclined pose...

...and I like to think of her as a hilarious cat version of an Odalisque or Venus. I'm pretty sure that my cat has an extensive knowledge of art history, so maybe she is doing it on purpose. I don't know. All she needs is some sort of allegorical scene or symbolic objects arranged artfully in the background and I'd swear she was posing for Titian. Except that she's not gazing directly at my camera and causing a scandal by looking you in the eye. So maybe she's posing for Ingres.

Or maybe majoring in art history makes me think weird things.

free crochet pattern :: extra cushy pet rug

I love handmade projects that have to do with pets! My cat are always trying to get into my knitting and crochet supplies anyway, so why not make something for them? I decided to make a cat-sized rug for them to curl up on because they really love a particular afghan that I made from acrylic yarn a few years ago and pull out for warmth each winter. This rug uses the same type of yarn and I can keep it out all year and easily move it from room to room.

To make this rug extra thick and cushy I crocheted using 4 strands of Aran 10ply acrylic yarn at once (just like the big skeins of Red Heart or TLC yarn you can easily find in most craft stores). I chose two shades of blue and two shades of gray and grabbed a big plastic crochet hook, too (I used a P/10mm hook).

Round 1: Using all four strands of yarn as one, chain 5. Use a slip stitch to join the chain into a circle, then chain 3 (this chain 3 counts as your first DC). DC 9 into the circle (10 DC all together).

Round 2: Chain 3. 2DC into each stitch around.

Round 3: Chain 3. *1DC in first stitch, 2DC in next stitch; repeat from * to end.

Round 4: Chain 3. * 1DC in first stitch, 2DC in next stitch; repeat from * to end.

Round 5: Chain 3. * 1DC in first stitch, 2DC in next stitch; repeat from * to end.

Round 6: Chain 3. *1DC in first stitch, 1DC in second stitch, 2DC in third stitch; repeat from * to end.

Round 7: Chain 3. 1DC in stitch around.

Round 8: Chain 3. *1DC in first stitch, 1DC in second stitch, 2DC in third stitch; repeat from * to end.

Your rug should measure about 18.5 inches/47cm across. This is a great size for a cat or small pup!

If you notice that your rug isn't laying flat as you work on it (I sometimes have trouble with curling edges) it is helpful to adjust your tension (looser) or gently spread out your work and pull the edges to flatten them.

Happy crocheting!

ruby red

I canned six jars of cherries yesterday! They are my favorite summer fruit, but are at that affordable summer price for such a short time I thought this would be the perfect summer to try canning a batch. Canning whole fruits is pretty awesome, so far I've done peaches and cherries. Do you know any whole fruits that are easy to can with good results?

*completed ampersand mini quilt*

I finished the ampersand mini quilt yesterday! I love the way it looks... greens and blues are my favorite and they really pop against the silvery-gray background...

I like the way the free form stitches contrast with the clean shape of the ampersand... I'm not even sure how many different colors of thread I used in this piece! I made sure to include light, dark, and medium tones. The ampersand shape is outlined in black and I also used gray thread that matches the fabric to outline the design and the edge of the quilt.

Once I brainstormed the idea for this little lovely I had to do it! And once I got started stitching I couldn't stop! It's the French knots... I always get hooked on French knots : )

I'd love to do another quilt like this... do you have any favorite symbols or typography elements? I'm not sure what to make next, so I'd love to hear some suggestions!

This piece is now listed in my shop (and don't forget about the discount code and blog reader bonus that is available until July 24th!).

Check out my new-in-progress embroidery project! I'm using a bunch of awesome blue, green, and turquoise colors against a gray background and combining different types of textural stitching...

It's going to be a mini quilt and hopefully I'll finish the hand sewing by tomorrow!

Setting Goals for your Small Business

Making plans for our Etsy shop or small business can be one of the most fun and challenging responsibilities you face. It's a great time to dream big and think about all the possibilities, everything you would like to achieve in the next year and beyond. It can be intimidating, too - an entire year to plan for! Not to mention the future of your business. Take a deep breath and listen up - you can totally do it if you break the task into small steps and take one step at a time!

The first step to planning out a year's worth of objectives is to create a "Big Picture" list. This is a great way to get your goal-making juices flowing! Sit down with your notebook or computer and write a list of all the things you would like to accomplish in the next year - business goals and personal goals, too. Choose a few BIG goals that will take the most time and energy (like setting up an online shop, participating in a big craft sale, or launching a new product) and include more small goals that will be less time consuming (such as using your Twitter account, organizing a supply area, or planning a weekly coffee date with your BFF).

After you have finished your "Big Picture" list it's really helpful to break it down into a month-by-month schedule. This way you can see which goals are time sensitive (like planning for holiday season sales or scheduling a trip) and you can give yourself deadlines for completing other projects. Start with your BIG goals, plugging them into each month, then fill in the smaller goals.

For example, my big goals for July have been to develop items to market for back-to-school season and to create a new crochet pattern to sell. Those goals have taken up the biggest percentage of my time and energy this month. I've also plugged in quite a few small goals like stocking up on packaging supplies and making a simple tutorial to post on my blog. Next month I have one really big goal of moving into my new apartment and getting settled, so I balanced my list by including a bunch of small goals that I know I can accomplish!

Here are a few more goal making tips:

Keep Your Goals Handy: Keep your list in a spot where you will see/read/review it often.

Add Details: The more details you use the more focused you will be.

Celebrate Your Achievements: Get excited when you accomplish a goal! Cross it off the list, tweet about it, tell your friends!

Cute & Crafty DIY Packaging Idea

I spent some time this week thinking about simple & affordable ways to package my Etsy orders while maintaining a personalized, handmade look. I came up with a great solution that works for my shop AND would be cute for gift-giving, too!

The supplies are: brown paper lunch bags (I paid 99 cents for 50 bags), "Hello My Name Is" sticker badges (I paid $2.89 for a giant pack), a pen or marker, scissors, and a sewing machine.

Using your sewing machine, sew a line across the paper bag above the flat bottom. You can sew it higher for packaging smaller items, or sew it right above the flat bottom to fit larger items. I drew a dotted line on this bag to show where I was going to sew:

After you've sewn across, use scissors to cut off the bottom of the bag. I used pinking shears to give it a zig-zag edge. Next, place your item in the bag and fold down the top. Use one of the "Hello My Name Is" stickers to seal the package. I wrote my shop name on the sticker to personalize it, you could also use it as a gift tag by inscribing it with the recipient's name.

Here is another tip: Don't throw away the bottom of the bag! Cut it into strips or run it through your shredder to make packing material for boxes - use it instead of packing peanuts or bubble wrap to cushion delicate items. Brown paper bags are recyclable and compostable so it's more eco-friendly than plastic (well... most things are more eco-friendly than plastic!).

c a m e r a !

My new camera arrived two days early! What an awesome surprise!
(I broke my previous camera... that happens to me every few years and it's quite disturbing)

Going even a few days without a camera was very unpleasant, so I'm happy it's over!
Now I can get down to serious business finishing up my new crochet pattern and writing up a guest blog post for next week.

But for today I'm enjoying some time outside!

Don't put up my Thread and Needle --
I'll begin to Sew
When the Birds begin to whistle --
Better Stitches -- so --

Till then -- dreaming I am sewing
Fetch the seam I missed --
Closer -- so I -- at my sleeping --
Still surmise I stitch --

good morning to you

Hello Monday morning!
My camera is sadly out of commission right now, but the problem should be fixed by the end of the week. It's just inconvenient. (creating a new pattern)

I have designed a new crochet pattern
for a mug cozy!

So far I'm using it to add some cozies to my shop but I plan
to turn it into a written pattern, too.

The cozy covers the bottom and sides of the mug, then fastens with a button
through the handle.

So much fun to make!
